Political MEME Project 6

Political MEME Project 6

Q Instructions: For this assignment there are three steps: 1. Critique an existing meme 2. Create a new political meme For the first part of the assignment please go online and find a political meme. VERY IMPORTANT: copy the link to the meme. Then I want you to evaluate the assumptions of the meme. For example, why is it considered funny or not funny? Is the premise true or false? Do you think political meme's can spread misinformation on social media? The second part of the assignment is to create your own political meme that is both funny and informative. Using https://imgflip.com/memegenerator (Links to an external site.) you can find an image or upload your own and add a caption. Then please include 2-3 sentences explaining why your meme is funny and informative. Associated Course Level Learning Outcomes: ? Understand and utilize a variety of theoretical approaches to the analysis of institutional/policy outcomes of government. ? Demonstrate development of critical, analytical, research, and writing skills. Unit Objectives: • o ? Identify media bias in recent news articles; specifically filtering, framing, slant, and priming. ? Evaluate the validity of different sources of information. ? Critically analyze how the media affects public opinion. Example: 1) I found this meme on the internet by googling "political meme". The meme is based off of several false assumptions. First we know that politicking online is not directly related to an increase in political participation offline (Pangaopoulos 2009). Another false premise is that politics is violent. According to Ryer's lecture, politics is the process through which society discusses and makes compromises on how to structure society without recourse to violence (2018). 2) In this meme I've used Ron Burgundy, a very popular character from the movie Anchorman, to critique the legitimacy of mainstream media. According to Krutz, news sources on mainstream media tend to be ideological biased through priming, framing, and slant (2017). Works Cited Krutz, Glen. 2017. American Government. https://in.pinterest.com/MissBeautifulMysterious/memes-politics/- link In this meme it is assumed that Donald Trump will not be a good president of the United States and those thinking that he will be a good president for the country are not thinking properly. The supporters of Trump are being made fun of in this meme. It is funny because the country knows the background and history of Trump, hence considering him or voting for him to be president is not wise. Sometimes political memes do spread wrong information but mostly it is taken in a fun manner and not seriously. Memes are originally fun in nature and not taken very seriously so there is less chance of spreading misinformation about the same. However in recent times we have seen memes on corona virus which are fake and spread misinformation which is wrong and must not be spread at all since this is a matter of people’s health and safety. Memes should be fun and light, nothing serious or criminal that can negatively impact the public.
